On November 21-22, the 1st (Sub) Regional Consultation on PrEP among MSM and trans* people in Central Asia was held in Almaty. The event included discussions on program funding, HIV prevention situation, monitoring of service quality, communication and, of course, innovations in pre-exposure prophylaxis of HIV.
Within the initiative of the Alliance for Public Health, the #SoS_project partners team conducted a promotional campaign to increase knowledge about injecting pre-exposure prophylaxis of HIV, the pilot project of which is already launched in Ukraine.
More than 100 participants came to Kazakhstan for consultation, including representatives of patient and medical communities, government agencies and non-profit organizations, international organizations and UN agencies. It is not by chance that the event is being held in Kazakhstan. The country has managed to achieve significant progress in the implementation of the PrEP. In 2023, more than 5,000 patients in the country have received PrEP at least once. The goal for the end of 2026 is to cover at least 20% of key populations, which is more than 30,000 people.
It should be noted that a substantial part of the counseling is funded by a regional grant from The Global Fund, #SoS_Project_2.0, which is implemented by a consortium of partners, including the Alliance for Public Health, World Health Organization, ECOM and other organizations that pay great attention to the popularization and promotion of PrEP at the regional level.
